Haudanmaa is spontaneous, progressive and sounds a lot like a circus a lot of the time. This isn't a concept album as such, but the lyrics are mostly critical of modern Western society and favouring a more natural lifestyle, and there is a lot of Finnish folklore incorporated into them. Soturi sets the scene and is perhaps the most wild and progressive of all of the songs, and the verses are made up of solo after solo from instruments such as the accordian. There seems to be little real structure in the riff wankery that these guys demonstrate, but it's relatively amusing anyway, at least for the first few minutes. Not all of the songs are so obscure though, but the obscure sound is definitely the bands best selling point, and without it everything is quite bland, with the exception of one or two songs, especially Pimeä Jää which has a very harmonious flow to it. There is an epic violin solo in it that is instantly followed by an equally epic guitar solo, which will have people in awe. The vocals are mostly very husky and raw in the verses, and in the choruses they tend to be a bit more melodic and smooth. The metal side of the bands hybrid style isn't completely transparent, as Varjokuvia has less of a polka influence and incorporates mostly standard metal instruments, and it all leads to an epic climax for the album. - The Meal Forge
