On 'Pictures Of Death', Shadow Cut brings the listener a raw, mid tempo style of black metal that focuses less upon blasting and more on evil sounding, abrasive grooves, which is a nice change of pace for a black metal act. Do not be mistaken, there are some fast rhythms and rapid fire double bass beats here, but Shadow Cut is obviously a band that realizes that they can create a sinister sound with out resorting to speed for speed's sake. That's not to say the band never gets blasting, on 'My Sweet Cult', you will find some snare balsts alternating with double kick flurries. The manner in which the band incorporates this dynamic increases the power of the blasts and places more emphasis on their dirge like breakdowns.

The record on the whole is somewhat under produced, which assists in giving the tracks their raw, diabolical atmosphere. The tracks here also are fairly long, averaging at five minutes, without ever becoming boring. The group incorporates subtle time changes that give the music a variance throughout the course of the album from the dark, bleak strains of 'Throatcuts Nine' to the driving, apocalyptic title track.

Listeners will not find a lot of melody or fast guitar runs here, instead Shadow Cut bring forth a focus on chaotic rhythms, bone crushing beats and raspy dismal vocals that meld perfectly together to create a sound that is nothing short of evil incarnate. 'The End Of Humanity' seethes with a burning fury, its bridge riff being one of the best on the record. With an album packed full of killer black metal tracks, Shadow Cut has proven themselves to be not only a band that veers away from the trends of the genre, but also one of the most uncompromising acts existing today. - Metal Archives
