As much as nature is promoted in black metal, most bands don't prefer to make it into an aesthetic determinant. With Vargtimmen pt. 1, though, Narqath puts his money where his mouth is and delivers an entire album dedicated to the appreciation of nature.
Vargtimmen pt. 1 impressed me from the beginning and never let up. Wyrd layers depressive keyboards on top of droning guitars with great effect on songs such as Autumn and Sad Song of the Woods. The latter is 17 minutes, but due to skillful songwriting passes by in what seems like half that time. There's actually only four songs on the album; the outro is a continuation of Vargtimmen.
The album doesn't contain much in the way of variety, which only enhances the somber atmosphere. The production is fuzzy, and the vocals are either an atypical, namely lower than normal, rasp or clean singing. Due to the fuzzy production, even the clean singing doesn't sound very clean sometimes.
There's not much more I can say here. This is easily one of the best black metal albums of 2003, and doesn't contain a low point. Highly recommended. - Metal Archives
