5 years after their debut “Angel Inside” (released on Italian label The Spew) Belgian deathcore stalwarts Welkin return with “The Origin”. The band’s characteristic grooving, stout riffs and mid-paced drumming remain intact, and while they have become better musicians – it’s the unadventurous songwriting approach and the baroque production that pan much of the effect this record should have had. With half a decade seperating this record and their debut, “The Origin” comes off as a bit underwhelming due to a number of reasons. Demis Holvoet is spastic as ever behind the mic, but his vocal lines don’t quite lash out at the listener the way one would expect. Sven De Caluwé (Aborted, Leng Tch’e) performs guestvocals on ‘Chapters’ and another few guest spots are filled by some semi-prominent vocalists in the Belgian underground. There are a few influences from Gojira and Neurosis around every once in a while, but that doesn’t quite significantly help elevate the material at hand. The riffs are a bit on the monotone side and tend not to stray from the usual deathcore pattern. On the other hand, the bass lies prominently in the mix and this delivers a much needed punch Welkin is otherwise missing on this record. Recorded at the rather unknown Max Studio in Bruges (Belgium) the guitar tone is a bit muddy and the drums sound plain horrible. Add to that the abstract artwork and recurring sample of screaming monkeys and the result is a record with limited appeal outside of those already familiar with the band. Well performed, above avarage songwriting but the lack of guitar leads, urgency, overlapping brutality and a low key production job make “The Origin” a record that could have been so much more than it currently is. - Masterful Magazine
